A native of Denver, Colorado, Michael Shields has built a career as a public artist with a focus on large scale glass art installations.
Degrees in Philosophy and Psychology have informed his art installations in ways that ensure they become expressions/reflections of the patron communities.
Shields's significant public art commissions include:
- a four story art glass wall at the Colorado School of Mines
- a glass and metal mobile sculpture at the new Colorado Bureau of Investigation Laboratory
- a five and one half story bicycle wheel and glass sculpture at Kaiser Permanente, Lone Tree, CO
Now this background plays a role in an added dimension to his work. Smaller scale, stand alone piece work allows Shields to explore his personal interest in new materials, pattern, repetition, and disruption.
